In the Master Works class, students follow the same progression as in the Florence Academy of Art in a nurturing environment. Drawing and painting students work along side sculpture students learning basic quality of line in order to build a basis for more accurate observational skills. Students work with Bargue drawings, old masters works, and casts at first in pencil and then move on to charcoal.
Bargue Drawings & Old Master Copies
Master Works is a based on the studies and work by Charles Bargue and other old masters. Charles Bargue created a classical drawing course with Jean-Leon Gerome called Cours de dessin. It influenced and was used by ateliers and schools across Europe. They include drawings Charles Bargue is mostly remembered for his Cours de dessin, one of the most influential classical drawing courses conceived in collaboration with Jean-Léon Gérôme. The course, published between 1866 and 1871 by Goupil & Cie, and composed of 197 lithographs printed as individual sheets, was to guide students from plaster casts to the study of great master drawings and finally to drawing from the living model.
Among the artists whose work is based on the study of Bargue’s platework is Vincent van Gogh, who copied the complete set in 1880/1881, and (at least a part of it) again in 1890.
These drawings help the student to work through many of the problems that need solving in order to gain a more masterful approach to 2 dimensional work, for example, when a line moves from soft and light to hard and dark in one long stroke. Students work with Bargue drawings, old masters works, and casts at first in pencil and then move on to charcoal.
